Automation a Selling Point

SIMPSONVILLE, KY
Neff Packaging Solutions recently added a six-color, 18,000-sph Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 press to its new 122,000-sq-ft plant in Simpsonville. The XL 105 shares the floor with a new eight-color, 15,000-sph Speedmaster CD 102 with extended delivery and UV capability, which Neff purchased to replace a half-size press.
Both machines are equipped with the Prinect Image Control color measuring system, and Neff mans each press with only two operators. The XL 105 boasts a fully automatic, nonstop logistics system that allows nonstop feeding and delivery of paperboard.
“Nobody slows the press down just to avoid a tripoff at a manual pile change,” says Robert D. Neff, chairman and CEO. “I could not envision printing on board at 18,000 sheets per hour without this degree of automation.”
With 40-in. UV capability on the press, the company now has an opportunity to seek other markets, such as higher-end cosmetics and personal care products, Neff says.
Established in 1959, family-owned Neff Packaging has been an all-Heidelberg shop “since day one,” says Neff. “Heidelberg is the mainstay of our business.”
