Bag-Shaped Carton Improves Sustainability

RICHMOND, VA | Chesapeake Corp., a specialty packaging manufacturer, teamed up with UK confectionery company Green & Black’s to reduce the packaging for its organic chocolate Easter egg by more than 60% compared to the previous egg-shaped package. A team from Chesapeake’s design studio in Bradford, England, took the customer’s concept and developed the new bag-shaped carton made exclusively from carton board. The new pack eliminates the plastic insert used to hold the egg in place in the previous version. These changes resulted in an annual reduction of more than 70 tons of plastic and carton board packaging. Chesapeake manufactures the packs from FSC-certified carton board and prints with six colors. A special drip-off varnish process combines registered high-gloss and matt varnishes to provide a strong shelf presence. Visit www.chesapeakecorp.com.
