SCA Packaging Switzerland Saves Energy with Retrofit

HINGHAM, MA | SCA Packaging Switzerland, a provider of customer-specific packaging with an emphasis on modern design and local service, recently decided to retrofit its Bobst SPO2000 die-cutting press for corrugated board.
“The heat and energy consumption generated by the machines was a challenge that we wanted to address,” said Viktor Müller, head of workshop at SCA Packaging Switzerland. Equipped with mechanical pumps, the press was running at a working temperature of approximately 80-90 degrees Celsius. Noise was also a major concern, as the vacuum pumps were generating over 85dB of sound. “Enhancing the work environment for our employees is always top of mind.”
The company worked with partner PIAB to install its new P6040 vacuum pump with energy-saving system on the Bobst machine. The pump can be mounted closer to the point-of-suction, resulting in smaller pump requirements with lessened energy needs.
“Since retrofitting the die-cutting press, we have seen a reduction of about 50% in energy consumption, and our noise levels have been lowered to just 80 dB,” said Müller. “With the P6040 in place, the work environment is also great improved with a comfortable room temperature.”
