Quality Control Solutions for Silicone Release Coaters

Do your quality control tools give you the confidence to make fast, informed decisions — whether in-line or at-line? As expectations and supply chains change and specifications tighten, even slight variations in silicone coat weight can compromise product performance and lead to costly waste.

In-Line Monitoring for the Entire Roll

The Rigaku NEX LS linear scanner utilizes energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) to provide real-time, in-line measurements of silicone coat weight for both cross and machine directions. Operators can identify and correct issues immediately, ensuring a consistent end product. The system delivers reliable performance across various substrate types and colors and accommodates web widths up to 2365 mm. The NEX LS provides:

  • Immediate defect detection for roll-to-roll applications
  • Cross-direction and machine-direction profiling
  • Roll reporting and data logging for traceability and audits
  • Easy automatic calibration and operation
  • Dynamic corrections for mineralogy variations in the substrate eliminate the need for taring and improve measurement accuracy

At-Line Verification for Precision Control

For at-line or lab-based checks, the compact Rigaku NEX QC Series benchtop analyzers offer fast, non-destructive analysis of ultra-low silicone coating weights. They also can be used to measure Sn, Bi, Ti, and Pt in metal-catalyzed silicone release coatings. These systems require no helium or special sample cups, simplifying operation and reducing cost.

Their effectiveness is demonstrated in two application studies: one analyzing silicone coatings on paper and plastic (EDXRF 1140) and another measuring low silicone coatings on plastic (EDXRF 1559). NEX QC Series analyzers provide:

  • Rapid silicone coating thickness and composition
  • Ultra-low silicone coating weights
  • Dynamic corrections for mineralogy variations in the substrate eliminate the need for taring and improve measurement accuracy
  • Measurement of Sn, Bi, Ti, Pt, etc. in metal-catalyzed silicone release coatings
  • Simple, easy operation and built-in printer

Whether integrating an in-line or at-line EDXRF system, silicone release coaters can achieve reliable coating uniformity, minimize waste, and maintain high-quality standards with confidence. Want to learn more? Contact Applied Rigaku Technologies.
