Dow Is Honored for Sustainability

HORGEN, SWITZERLAND | Dow Chemical Company reports that Packaging Europe magazine has named Dow’s PacXpert Packaging Technology winner of the category for “best weight reducing solution” at the premiere edition of the magazine’s Sustainability Awards.

Dow was also a participating partner in the REFLEX project aimed at improving the recyclability of flexible packaging in the UK, which has been awarded runner up in the “best brand” category.

With sustainability increasingly at the forefront of packaging innovation, Packaging Europe conceived its Sustainability Awards as an opportunity to celebrate the best, most innovative and most significant work being done towards improving the environmental impact of packaging and packaged goods.

Dow says the PacXpert Packaging Technology enables the transition from larger traditional rigid containers to flexible packaging while meeting market needs for sustainable design.

“We are honored and proud for the industry recognition that this award represents,” says Fabrice Digonnet, new business development leader EMEA, Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics. “In creating PacXpert, sustainable design was paramount for us. The result is a lightweight solution that uses less raw materials to make each package, increases transportation efficiency with empty packages shipping flat, thus potentially lowering CO2 emissions, lowers waste removal costs, and occupies less receptacle and disposal space.”

The REFLEX project is a two-year imitative funded by Innovate UK and led by Axion Consulting in collaboration with high-profile global brands within the EMEA packaging value chain. The project aims to create a “circular economy” for flexible packaging—improving recyclability by engaging the entire value chain involved in packaging lifecycles, from polymer production to package manufacturing to waste management as well as recycling companies and organizations. Dow is one of the participating partners in the project, which also includes converters Interflex and Amcor, brand owners Nestlé and Unilever, and waste management and recycling companies Tomra (https://www.tomra.com/en/) and Sita.

Dana Mosora, Dow’s EMEA Leader for Sustainability, says, “REFLEX is an example of how Dow is approaching the market—by looking to collaborate with all our partners, to develop innovative solutions for sometimes very complex issues like sustainability. This method of working together is gaining prominence within our industry. It is inspiring for not just our partners and other members of the value chain but key influencers like Packaging Europe, which is excellent news.”
