Vehicle Retention is a Drying Not a Driving Issue

People have different ideas about the best time to purchase a new automobile to replace their present one. Some people wait a specific number of years; others drive their vehicle for a specific number of miles. Still others become intrigued with a new model because of its looks or features.

Rotogravure an Evolving Process

Rotogravure printing evolved from the intaglio printing process, which still is used in specialty applications such as printing our currency. Rotogravure has been used since the beginning of the 20th century and still is considered the quality printing standard by which other printing processes are measured. It has unique characteristics that cannot be duplicated by other printing processes, including...

Slitting Debris: Cracking the Case

Dust and debris are a common but unwanted side product of slitting. Slitting debris comprises the small particles that break off a product's edge during the slitting process. It is created through fracture and abrasion. Uncontrolled slitting debris will lead to defects in your customer's product and equipment downtime.

Good News Hunting

As the show and conference circuit winds down for the year with only the Packaging Machinery Mfrs. Institute's Pack Expo (Nov. 7-11 at Chicago's McCormick Pl.) to go before the holidays hit, I've heard increasingly positive statements while good news hunting about the health of the converting industry. The caveat here is that it appears the description of good health applies to specific markets.

RFID & EPC Systems

By now, most members of the converting industry probably have heard about Electronic Product Code (EPC) systems which, using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), will allow logistical tracking of products throughout the distribution chain, revolutionizing the product distribution process well beyond the current bar code technology. The converting industry will be part of that revolution as major retailers and the government begin mandating its use.

The Gold Standard

Vibrant colors and shimmering foils receive high marks at the Tag & Label Mfrs. Inst. (TLMI) 2004 awards competition. Winners were announced October 26 during TLMI's 2004 annual meeting in LaQuinta, CA. A total of 107 awards were presented, including 47 first place, 22 second place, and 35 honorable mentions. Here are details on just a few of this year's winners.

Extrusion Dies

Due to the intense competition in today's marketplace, extrusion-coating converters face greater challenges than ever.

Keeping it Clean

Today's cleaning equipment requires a slightly higher degree of sophistication. "The days of the two-by-four cleaner are gone," Cannon notes. He adds the converter now has a number of alternative web cleaning solutions including air systems (suck, blow, or a combination of both), ultrasonic systems, and contact cleaners.

Technical Facility

The Brueckner Group, a German manufacturer of film stretching lines, film and sheet lines, and extrusion equipment, has a pilot lab most film converters would love to get their hands on.

Coating Rods

The Great Equalizer Charles Mayer, who grew up in the age of Edison and Ford, invented the metering rods we use today. A century of evolution has gone into wire-wound coating rods. Still called Mayer rods, after Charles W. Mayer (rhymes with wire), they continue to be popular 100 years later because they're inexpensive, accurate, and easy to use...
