How did you get into the converting business?

After working in the paper business during college and after graduation, I decided I would like to manufacture a product and concluded I would go into the converting business. In 1954 I bought a Simplex bag machine.

What do you know now that you wish you knew then?

I would have spent more time developing a more elaborate strategic plan and understanding the growth of markets.

How has your management style evolved?

I became less involved in day-to-day manufacturing activities, leaving it to a team of excellent managers but always maintaining a personal involvement.

What is your key to retaining good employees?

Creating a family atmosphere and knowing your employees.

What keeps you up at night with regard to your business?

Our obligation to our employees and their families.

What is the biggest mistake you made and how did you fix it?

Not educating employees regarding the unionization movement. How did we fix it? We didn't; the employees did by decertifying the union.

What was the worst advice you ever got?

Don't go into plastics; make spiral paper straws.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in this business?

Do your homework and make sure you understand the markets and what to focus on.

Who is your personal hero?

My wife. In my early years of business, she was the one that gave me the support and encouragement to follow through on my desire to go into manufacturing.

What is the biggest threat to the converting industry right now?

The world is growing smaller, and our competition is beyond our country. We must find ways to compete with competitors who do not compensate their employees with salaries and benefits. These countries do not call for the stringent and costly environmental compliance that the US requires.

What are you most proud of in your business?

We are very proud of being honored twice as Quad Graphics Supplier of the Year. My son Harley, who is now president, represents the fourth generation of the family business. As I took this company to a new level, my son has taken the business to yet another level.
