NPA's Best of Show Packages
- Published: July 10, 2003, By Nsenga Byrd Thompson, Staff Editor
The National Paperbox Association announced the winners in its 53rd Annual Packaging Competition held this past January in Alexandria, VA. Awards in the international competition were announuced at the association’s 85th annual meeting held June 22-25 at the Westin Nova Scotian, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Twenty-two rigid box and folding carton industry firms from around the world shared in 146 awards in the Association’s 2002 Packaging Showcase Competition. The NPA also announced the two Best of Show Awards" bestowed on the top scorer of all rigid Box entries and top scorer of all folding carton entries.
Best of Show—Folding Carton
All Packaging Co., Aurora, CO, received top honors for "Glominerals" produced for Caleel-Hayden LLC. This innovative family of packages is designed for a new, high-end cosmetic line sold to a select professional market. The packaging needed to project a professional, prestigious image but could not be at the high cost of similar product lines. The customer and designer achieved the "prestgious" look using two contrasting coatings to duplicate the "glo" logo on the entire background of each carton. A unique 2-step coating process—all done in one pass during printing—creates the dramatic effect, says NPA.
Best of Show—Rigid Box
Taylor Box Company, Warren, RI, garnered Best of Show for its "Private Client Bank Division Promotional Box," created for Dickson’s Inc. The unique horizontal slipcase with the tray style of box makes this a very high-end presentation piece, reports NPA. Using a silver satin ribbon pull for both sliding the tray out of the slipcase and pulling out the material in the tray "is very versatile," adds the industry group. Materials include a .080 vat board, .018 CCNB, 80# litho with 2-color process print and film lamination.
"This set-up box demands attention, the colors are sophisticated and current, evocative of the personality of the advertising and promotional materials contained within," raves NPA. "The box is extremely strong and efficient while presenting a new refreshing look."
The 146 winners were selected from 39 classes and five judge’s categories. The judging panel designated a total of 56 Gold Awards and 90 Excellence Awards. For a complete list of winners, contact NPA at 703/684-2212. Visit NPA at paperbox.org.
