SEI Laser Offers Platform for Digital Converting

CURNO, ITALY | SEI Laser offers PaperOne, the latest generation of a new modular platform for digital finishing and converting, featuring laser technology. Distributed in North America by Matik and developed by SEI Laser in close collaboration with HP Indigo, PaperOne is said to handle complex die-cutting and finishing of packaging, greeting cards, envelopes, and more at maximum speeds with top quality and accuracy.

Unit can process up to 2,500 sheets/hr and has an automatic pallet loading and unloading system. Company says its fast, accurate feeder can handle sizes to 20.87 x 29.53 in. (53 x 75 cm), and thicknesses from 150–600 μm. It consistently die-cuts, micro-perforates, pierces, engraves, and marks paper, corrugated board, and adhesive-coated stocks as well as PP, BOPP, and PET.

PaperOne will be demonstrated with an HP Indigo digital press in the HP booth (Hall 17) at drupa 2016, May 31–June 10, in Düsseldorf, Germany, where additional capabilities will be announced.

For carton converters, PaperOne can be configured with three different wattage lasers, said to essentially double productivity and providing added redundancy and greater line speed. According to company, the machine also addresses challenges involving creasing, effectively cutting and creasing the box in the right shape, ready for folding. This means creasing and folding can be done in-house in a simple, fast, and cost-effective process.

Said to be ideal for cutting small and intricate designs for paperboard packaging QR codes and barcodes allow for auto-setting and change of process on the fly.

"It's not enough to have a digital press to enter the digital business model," says Ettore Colico, sales executive, SEI Laser. "The full workflow must be digital from the PDF to shipment. PaperOne fits in perfectly with a cloud workflow, and there is no waiting time, supply costs, or transport costs."

The modular, multi-platform system offers converters digital cutting as well as digital finishing, such as creasing and embossing. The creasing system can be set up offline to maximize uptime of the machine. In addition, system allows converters to make their own die plates.

PaperOne can be connected by conveyor directly to an HP Indigo Digital Press, so the sheets feed directly into the press. Sheets can either be pile-fed, or the two machines can be linked together. Allows automatic, loading, unloading, and auto-setting.
