Bobst System Monitors Defects During Metallization

LANCASHIRE, UK | The Bobst General Registron Hawkeye monitoring system that detects, counts, and categorizes pinholes and other defects from 0.1 mm upward, at full metallizer speed.
Featuring an OD beam measuring up to 4.5 OD at 25 mm pitch with maximum web width of 4 m, modular design is said to be robust and easy to calibrate with easily replaceable probes. Unit can be standalone or integrated into the metallizer control system. When a defect is detected, the operator is alerted and the type of defect is logged.
Hawkeye counts and classifies holes in three sizes, the minimum size of detectable holes is between 0.1 and 0.2 mm, and unit can count up to 255 max holes for each category at each sensor, with a sampling rate of 500 ms or larger. Any holes detected that are larger than 2 mm will be classified as a scratch. Production speed is 1,000 mpm.
Company says product provides easy cleaning, modules that can be added or removed as necessary, 100% functionality from 10–45 deg C, a stable design that allows one month without calibration, and vacuum compatibility.
Generates reports as PDF, ensuring production is not interrupted. Reports include deposit and pinhole information, a summary of the metallizing cycle, and several trend reports showing roll quality in various formats. Can be used during the AlOx process to allow greater precision control and quality assurance, company adds.
