Hot Melt Committee Holds Annual Symposium
- Published: April 01, 2001
The 2001 Hot Melt Symposium will be June 10-13 at the Westin Resort Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. Georges N. Altounian of Hercules, Inc., is the symposium chairperson. “Using ‘2001: A Hot Melt Odyssey’ as its theme, this meeting will feature pertinent technical information on new product commercialization, hot melts as sealants, the synergistic effect of hot melt chemistry on performance and cost, control of application process operations using online measurements, and market potential for hot melts in various areas of the globe,” said Altounian. “The symposium will appeal to technical, marketing, and business personnel involved with hot melt products and their applications.”
Introductory Tutorial
The symposium will open on June 10 with a tutorial using the theme “Back To Basics.” It will review raw materials, formulation techniques, and process equipment. John C. Tangen, 3M Company, is the tutorial chairperson. Keith A. Nelson of ExxonMobil Chemical Company will talk on “Raw Material Overview.” “The Use Of Oil In Adhesive Systems” is the title of the presentation by Paul Taylor of Equilon Enterprises. Edward Calcote of the same organization will talk on “The Use Of Petroleum And Synthetic Paraffin Waxes In EVA Based Hot Melt Adhesives.” Neal J. Earhart of Ciba-Geigy Corp. will give a presentation on “Hot Melt Adhesives and Components: Oxidation, Degradation.” “Methods For Applying Hot Melt Adhesives” is the final paper by Lee R. Baker, consultant.
Literature Table displays available during the entire conference provide symposium attendees with the latest information on materials, coating, testing, etc., in the hot melt industry. “The information available at the literature tables,” notes Altounian, “is another way that this symposium gives registrants up-to-date information to help them solve their problems and do a better job.”
Technical Sessions
The keynote speaker who opens the sessions on June 11 is Lionel Guerdoux from BostikFindley. He will talk on various aspects of the hot melt industry today. Glenn M. Liacouras of Sartomer will be the chairperson for the next session consisting of four technical papers. Hermann Onusseit of Henkel will talk on “The Influence of Hot Melts In Paper Recycling.” The next speaker is Brian J. Swetlin of Hercules, Inc., on “Managing The Development Of New Products.” “Market Attractiveness Of New Product Concepts” is the title of the presentation by Robert W. Smith of ChemQuest. The final paper of the session by Ahmed Sharf of H.B. Fuller is “Hot Melt Adhesives Comprising Crystalline And Amorphous Polymers.”
The chairperson for the afternoon session on June 11 is John A. Lovrak of Firestone Polymers. The first four papers will focus on reactive hot melt technology. Alain Drexler of Atofina Chemicals will speak on “Crosslinkable Polyurethane Hot Melt Via OH Terminated Polybutadiene Polymers.” Ju-Ming Hung of National Starch will present a paper on “High Initial Strength With Long Open Time Reactive Hot Melt Adhesives.” After an overview on “Polyurethane Reactive Hot Melt Adhesives” by Rasmik Boghossian of H. B. Fuller, Edward C. McGhee will talk about “Application Equipment Used For Reactive Hot Melt Adhesives.”
The session will continue with a talk by Richard A. Miller of Eastman Chemicals on “Extending Elastomer With Amorphous Polyolefins In Hot Melt Sealants.” Robert S. Forsyth, retired, will address “Packaging And Hot Melt Packaging Adhesives: 50 Years Of Change And Progress.” The final paper of the session by John A. Harvey of ExxonMobil Chemical is “The Value Of Hydrogenated Hydrocarbon Tackifiers In Packaging Applications.”
The morning session on June 12 with Richard A. Stultz of BostikFindley as chairperson will feature six technical papers. The first three papers will focus on the process of using hot melt adhesives and process control. The initial paper by Robert G. Dages of Kroenert Corp. is “Fundamentals of Hot Melt Roll Coating.” Kim Townsend of Eurotherm Gauging Systems, Ltd., will talk on “Online Measurement.” “Hot Melt PSA Applied With Precision Roll Coater” is the title of the next paper by Mark Kroll of H. B. Fuller.
Paul Badie of Cray Valley-Sartomer will deliver a paper entitled “Hot Melt Formulation: Miscibility and Adhesion.” David J. St. Clair of Kraton Polymers, Inc., will talk on “Cross-linking Of Acid Functional Styrenic Block Copolymer With Aluminum Acetalacetonate.” Nestor Hansen of Goodyear Chemical will cover “The Use Of Statistically Designed Experiments To Optimize The Use Of Processing Oil And Liquid Tackifier In A Single Hot Melt PSA.”
Symposium Award Dinner
An award dinner on June 12 will provide symposium attendees with an opportunity for networking with everyone at the meeting. Besides presenting an award to Robert D. Mitchell of Austin Marketing Resources for his Best Paper at the 2000 Hot Melt Symposium, the Hot Melt Committee will name the winner of their annual Certificate of Appreciation for service to the group.
The final session on June 13 will feature a workshop on “Hot Melt Adhesive Test Methods.” Loyce Ardemagni of Eastman Chemical will chair the session that will emphasize the use of test methods to assess performance of pressure sensitive and non-pressure sensitive hot melt adhesives.
