Industry Research News from AWA...
A recent AWA study, Self-Adhesive Labelstock 2001: North and South American Market Update, provides an overview and analysis of opportunities for labelstock producers and material suppliers. AWA says the study shows a slower growth for the market

"In North America, the last 12 to 18 months have seen a dramatic slow-down in growth and an equally dramatic increase in margin pressures," says AWA. "Consolidation is occurring throughout the value chain and material suppliers and self-adhesive laminators are redefining their value propositions [due to additional margin pressures and market price increases]. Globalization also is having a profound effect on North America; the Power of multinational brands and the impact of ecommerce are changing the business emphasis here as they are across the world.

Says AWA principal, Corey Watson, of the North American market specifically: "Of all the North American markets for self-adhesive labels, the strongest is variable information printing and business systems, labeling, which now accounts for 52 percent of all labelstock production. Primary product labels today accounts for 43 percent of the self-adhesive labelstock market -- mostly in non-food markets such as toys, hardware, electronic goods, and household cleaning goods; film labels now dominate." AWA sees the best opportunities for growth in functional and security labeling applications as well as in anti-counterfeiting, tamper-evident, and anti pilferage applications.

As for South America, adds Watson, "primary product-labeling applications continue to dominate with 57 percent of the market, though VIP applications are growing strongly and will, we believe, soon take the lead in labelstock usage. Film labels are also growing strongly throughout the continent (at a double-digit rate) and will reach the penetration levels seen in developed markets quickly."
