TLMI Awards

The Tag and Label Mfrs. Inst. (TLMI), Naperville, IL, announced the winners of its 2007 Awards Competition October 23 during the annual meeting at the Fairmont Orchid resort on Hawaii’s Big Island. Of the 81 total awards presented, Taylor Made Labels snagged the coveted Best of Show prize, and McDowell Label & Screen Printing and Schreiner Group earned Innovator Awards.

“Differentiate: It Makes All the Difference” was the theme of the annual meeting. The winning converters proved that attention to detail is one way to differentiate from competitors.

TLMI also named 56 first-place winners and 23 second-place winners. Here is just a peek at some honored first-place winners; visit tlmi.com for more information.

Judges for the 2007 TLMI Awards were Steve Lee (chair), RotoMetrics; Mike Buystedt, XSYS Print Solutions; John Coleman, Nilpeter; Page Crouch, Clemson Univ.; Gary Gordon, Mark Andy; Pat Hague, Water Ink Technologies; Ray Mackura, Avery Dennison Fasson Roll; Robert Smithson, Trinity Graphics USA; Paul Teachout, Aquaflex; and Terry Trexler, Gallus.

Best of Show
Taylor Made Labels, Lake Oswego, OR, earns the top prize for Best of Show with its Symbion Wine Bottle & Neck Label. It was entered in the category of Wine & Spirits—Flexography/Letterpress (color process–prime). The winning label features ultraviolet (UV) flexo inks, four-color process with two spot colors, emboss printing, and two spot overprint varnishes as highlights on 60# gloss, pressure-sensitive stock. It has a unique die-cut as well. Photopolymer plates and 800- and 900-line anilox rolls are used.

Clear Water
The Neiman Marcus Butterfly Water Bottle label, entered in the Flexography (color process™prime) category, wins one of two first-place awards for Mid Atlantic Label, Forest Hill, MD. The label is printed four-color process in reverse, then white, then four-color process and varnish, requiring tight registration.

Desert Train
Collotype Labels Intl. Holdings, Adelaide, Australia, garners six first-place awards, including The Ghan wine label. Entered in the category of Wine & Spirits™Offset (color process™nonprime), the label is printed UV web offset with four-color process plus one spot orange and features silk screen high-build gloss.

It’s run on coated stock from UPM Raflatac at approximately 100 fpm in a single pass. Other suppliers include XSYS Print Solutions, Kodak, Stork, and RotoMetrics.

Balancing Act
Metropolis Label, Napa, CA, earns two first-place awards. One of the winners is a Capolan wine label, entered in the category of Wine & Spirits™Offset (color process–prime). The converter reports very difficult color balance challenges.

The label features UV waterless offset printing, flexo printing, foil stamping and embossing, plus die-cutting. UPM Raflatac supplies the label stock.

Picture Perfect
Dow Industries, Wilmington, MA, uses an HP digital press to produce the Yankee Candle Pillar label, entered in the Digital Printing–Household Goods category. The combination of digital printing on a unique vellum substrate and the matte varnish yields exactly the look the customer desired, Dow says, and earns the company one of two first-place awards. RotoMetrics is the die supplier.

Multi-Pack Presents Challenges
Label Technology, Merced, CA, says “killer” images that combine fine highlights and smooth vignettes demand exact registration to produce the Jergens Lotion Multi-Pack pouch, entered in the category of Roll to Roll (color process–prime). Adding to the challenge is very thick pouch material that tends to track poorly, according to the converter. The narrow web flex-pack is printed water-based flexo. Suppliers include DuPont Cyrel, RotoMetrics, Mark Andy, PCMC, and Harper.

Cherry Bouquet
Taking home four first-place awards is WS Packaging Group, Algoma, WI. In the category of Digital Printing™Wine & Spirits, the Red Oak Vineyard front and back wine bottle label is embossed and foil stamped with two colors, metallic gold and red, making registration very challenging. Suppliers include API Foils, XSYS Print Solutions (UV varnish), and Wausau Coated Products.

Peel & Stick
KimBells pack, Quezon City, Philippines, takes one of five first-place finishes for the YSA Diamond Peel Promo Sandwich label entered in the Promotional category. The hidden portion of the lower label can be printed with a prize code and/or product specifications while the label on top can be used as a decorative and collectible sticker.

Die-cutting is done in one pass. One blade must be sufficient to cut the inner circle without cutting through the second layer of material. Meanwhile, an outer blade must cut through the first and second layer but not the bottom-most layer of the glassine liner. Label is printed on a Siegwerk rotary UV letterpress.

Innovator Awards
A big winner with eight first-place awards is McDowell Label & Screen Printing, Plano, TX. The company also wins an Innovator Award for its Back in Blaque label, entered in the category of Roll to Roll™Line & Screen (tone™prime).

McDowell reports the brand owner “challenged us to help him create a sleeve that was ‘outta sight,’” including foil stamping the silver (zipper and medallion) and then printing, in register, a multi-dimensional effect for both the product name and the zipper and medallion that would shrink with the ink and film. This tanning product label is printed with DuPont plates using high-definition UV flexo inks from Water Ink Technologies.

Schreiner Group GmbH, Oberschleissheim, Germany, earns an Innovator Award for the double-sided Plastoclear Label with integrated microchip, which was entered in the Tags–Industrial and/or Systems category. The label is used for event admission through electronic gates and also can serve as a token for coat checks and in prize drawings as well as a means of payment.

In addition to providing proof of bearer’s identification, the label must be tamper-proof and counterfeit-proof, the converter reports. It is letterpress printed; FLEXcon is the film supplier.
