ShipGreen is a new company formed to enable online retailers to provide shoppers with the ability to calculate and offset the carbon emissions created by shipping products. The company uses a unique algorithm that takes into account the weight of each item as well as the distance and means of travel to calculate the emissions of shipping individual products. Participating retailers have a module installed on their site that allows shoppers at checkout to see the amount of CO₂ created by shipping their order. They then have the option of adding an amount, usually less than a dollar, to purchase an investment in a carbon offset project such as hydropower, wind farms, and reforestation. ShipGreen says all projects in their portfolio are inspected, verified, and certified by independent third parties to ensure a reduction in greenhouse gases.
