Print 01 Will Showcase Converting Technologies

Print 01 is coming to McCormick Place in Chicago, IL, September 6-13. Comprising nearly 1 million sq ft (93,000 sq m) of exhibit space, the event is billed by organizer Graphic Arts Show Co. (GASC) as the largest prepress, printing, publishing, and converting exhibition in the world.

The show, which takes place every four years, is expected to attract visitors from more than 100 countries. Converting advancements will include innovations in inks, adhesives, and UV/EB coatings; digital printing of labels, folding cartons, and films; high-speed finishing systems; and precision slitting equipment.

Converting displays will total more than 120,000 net sq ft, divided between the north and south halls of McCormick Pl. GASC reports that, since the mid-1990s, it has continued to make the converting sections of its shows more prominent, explaining that this strategy was guided by two major market trends: High quality printing has become a key competitive advantage in the packaging industry; and many commercial printers have started to view package printing as a major potential growth area.

Among the exhibitors targeting converters will be Butler Automatic. The company will feature its Zero Speed Automatic Splicer; a new vector drive for its existing 6000, 7000, and 80 SE automatic splicers; and new SP-1 and SP-2 splicers.

Capitol Converting will highlight the YT-1040NCS high-speed, automatic platen die-cutter, which reportedly is capable of running 7,000 impressions/hr on a wide range of stock.

INX Intl. Ink Co. will present Lamiall®, reportedly designed to allow converters to stock one ink system to print on varied substrates. Other product introductions include INXfresh, formulated for fast set times; INXCure®, a UV/EB product for all printing and coating processes; and INXFlex UV Ink®, a pourable, high-density UV ink for flexo.

Maxson Automatic Machinery will showcase the MSP Stationary Bed Sheeter designed for just-in-time production.

Brandtjen & Kluge will display new technology in stamping and embossing. The company will exhibit a foil delivery system that utilizes an electronic PLC-driven unit said to offer precise foil registration, resulting in less waste.

Crown Roll Leaf reports it will exhibit new, proprietary foils and films it says are free from intrusive plate lines. SuperFormat Silver Rainbow foils and films reportedly expand the usable area between plate lines, resulting in significant cost savings and waste reduction.

Print 01's educational program will include more than 90 sessions, which are being organized by Prof. Frank Romano, Rochester Inst. of Technology. The growing interconnection of packaging and printing technologies will be a major theme of the program. Attendees will have five industry areas to choose from, including a packaging/converting track. Session topics will include:

  • Packaging Industry Trends, J. Page Crouch
  • Corrugated Packaging Trends, J. Page Crouch
  • Label Packaging Trends, J. Page Crouch
  • Die-Cutting Trends, Robert Larson
  • Flexography Trends, J. Page Crouch
  • Foil-Stamping Trends, Foil Stamping & Embossing Assn.
  • Gravure Trends, Gravure Assn. of America.

One day before the show opens, a full-day conference entitled “Executive Outlook” will explore “Profits Through Technology A Print Odyssey.” At the conclusion of Executive Outlook, this year's “Must See 'Ems” will be unveiled. These are products and services chosen by industry experts as the most compelling things to see at the show.
