Recycled Paperboard Packages Win Big in Paperboard Contest

PRESS RELEASE

NEW YORK, NY, USA—Among the top honorees in this year's National Paperboard Packaging competition were ten folding carton packages made from recycled paperboard, according to the Recycled Paperboard Alliance (RPA-100%). Converters (and their customers) utilizing recycled paperboard for their packages recognized in this year's competition include Caraustar, Rock-Tenn, Procter & Gamble, Graphic Packaging International, and Kraft foods.

In addition, reports RPA-100%, the FedEX legal reusable envelope won for being an environmentally friendly packaging solution, and the packaging for Swoops, a product made by Hershey Foods Corp., also picked up an award for use of 100% recycled paperboard in the package's design.

Says Tom Townsend, paperboard procurement team manager at Hershey, "All of us at Hershey are extremely pleased with the performance of these unique cartons. The unusual design and great graphics fit right in with the new Swoops shape, helping us to provide consumers with a whole new experience."

The annual National Paperboard Packaging competition is judged by an impartial panel of packaging experts; entries were judged based on three criteria:

  • internal production and converting excellence;
  • excellence in consumer product company environment; and
  • retail consumer environment.

According to RPA-100%, over the last ten years, increasingly sophisticated recycled paper processing and technological improvements have earned the group's member companies many prestigious awards. Adds Lynn Harrelson, RPA-100%'s executive director, "These awards are solid proof of the increasing cost-effectiveness, quality, and popularity of 100 percent recycled paperboard."
