Smart Tag Hammers In-Store Theft
NORTH BRANFORD, CT, USA—When faced with an upturn in retail theft for one of its popular hand tools, Stanley Tools called in label specialist Brook & Whittle to help find a solution.

“Our main problem with the hammer line was targeted theft,” states Ryan Sousa, packaging engineer with Stanley Tools. “Contractors would go into a Home Depot and take a hammer off the shelf and place it in their holsters and walk out of the store. We needed a new tag construction that could incorporate a Sensormatic EAS [Electronic Article Surveillance] device as well as convey critical product information and branding.”

In partnership with Stanley Tools and its graphic designer, Brook & Whittle's R&D team created the tag, which is formed from two p-s laminates brought together and die-cut in a re-engineered press configuration. A clear PP material is overlaminated onto an eight-pt paper facestock, which is subsequently exposed to provide an adhesive carrier for the security device. Printed in five UV colors on a Mark Andy 4150, the p-s wraparound tag is attached to the handle of the hammer.
