Washington, Dc | Twenty-one companies, all partners in World Wildlife Fund's Climate Savers Program, announced an estimated 50 million tons of voluntary greenhouse gas emissions reductions by 2010 since the program's inception in 1999. Senior executives from a dozen companies briefed policymakers on Capitol Hill in March to deliver the message that climate protection and profitability can go hand-in-hand.
The list of Climate Savers companies includes The Coca-Cola Co., Elopak, Hewlett-Packard, Johnson & Johnson, Polaroid, and Tetra Pak. “Environmental protection and sustainable business performance are inextricably linked,” said Muhtar Kent, president/CEO of The Coca-Cola Co. “Governments, NGOs, and businesses have unique roles, but we must work more closely together to address climate change.”
By participating in Climate Savers, companies work with WWF to develop a climate action plan that includes absolute emission reduction targets and steps to meet their goals. Elopak, a leading beverage packaging company with customers in 100 countries, will reduce CO2 emissions 15% from 2008 levels by 2011.
