  • Proteus Packaging, Franklin, WI, became the first US company to purchase a Speedmaster XL 145 very large format press from Heidelberg. The folding carton producer chose the six-color press, with in-line aqueous coater, to upgrade its pressroom.

  • Diamond Packaging, Rochester, NY, earned five awards in the 2008 National Paperboard Packaging competition, sponsored by the Paperboard Packaging Council. The converter won a Gold Award, three Excellence Awards, and an Innovation Award.

  • Acme Corrugated Box Co., Hatboro, PA, has installed the Scrap Trakker waste data collection and reporting system from RTC Technologies, Kenosha, WI. The system will overcome reporting bottlenecks and help reduce waste. The data collected will aid in decision-making and support training programs.

CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA | Orange County Container installed a 56-in. Mitsubishi Diamond 6000LX press equipped for in-line aqueous and UV coating. Eight-color press prints on 0.004-0.040-in. stock, plus thermoplastic materials used to create lenticular images, a market segment OCC is developing. VP Dan Domino says, “The 6000LX has higher running speeds and faster setups to move short-run orders through much quicker and maintain efficient production on long-run orders.”

Smurfit-Stone Opens High-Tech L.A. Plant

LOS ANGELES, CA | Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. has opened its new Cerritos corrugated container manufacturing facility. The company invested $42 million to transform an existing facility into the state-of-the-art plant, which will employ approximately 123 people.

“The Cerritos plant represents our vision to build a world-class manufacturing organization, supporting our customers' needs through high-performing, highly accountable people; sophisticated equipment; and standardized, repeatable processes,” says president and COO Steve Klinger.

The Cerritos “super plant” is specifically designed to serve Southern California customers in the beverage, consumer goods, medical, food and produce, garment, and distribution businesses. The facility can produce as much as 2.3 billion sq ft of corrugated board/yr and an average of 350 boxes/min.

The plant also highlights Smurfit-Stone's commitment to integrating sustainability into its operations. To reduce energy consumption, the plant is powered by a high-efficiency boiler and uses highly efficient make-up air heaters in the production area.

Precision Diecutting Installs Bobst Amazon Folder/Gluer

PORT BRYON, NY | Precision Diecutting Inc. recently added a new Bobst Amazon 105 folder/gluer to its suburban Syracuse trade finishing operation. The Amazon is capable of running at 985 fpm and can fold solid board and microflute corrugated.

Precision's Amazon has the Bobst Wonderfold feature for back folding of four-corner cartons in-line. It also is equipped with a multi-inserter, which allows the insertion of CDs into holders and personaIized information into brochures during the folding process. Precision plans to add a high-speed Kleentick tape applicator that will allow the application of two-sided tape during the folding process.
