bMET II Film Allows Up to 30% Source Reduction for Filter & Fractional Coffee Packaging
- August 08, 2010
OSHKOSH, WI | Coffee roasters now have a sustainable material alternative for their filter and fractional packs that won’t sacrifice the product’s appearance, freshness or protection. bMET II metallized sealant film from Curwood is a new material that allows roasters to transition from 3-ply films to 2-ply to reduce packaging material weight up to 30%. Even for roasters already using 2-ply films, a switch to bMET™II can reduce packaging material weight by 10%, the company reports
In addition to source reduction, tough, lightweight bMET II film also increases roll footage 17% on a typical 16" OD roll, which translates to:
Less diesel usage and lower transport cost since more film fits per truck
Less downtime for roll changes
Reverse-printed in up to 10 colors, bMET II films is said to give filter and fractional packs a glossy finish that maintains its appearance through repeated handling. The advanced film also offers excellent machinability with good seal strength, and resists flex cracks and delamination. Made using customized resin blends and advanced coextrusions, bMET II barrier/sealant film is tailored to achieve the oxygen, moisture and aroma barrier required to protect delicate coffee freshness and flavor. The new film provides the barrier equivalent of metallized OPET to protect freshness longer. Convenience features can be incorporated for easy opening and controlled directional tear.
“bMET II film is engineered to deliver the most advanced combination of features available for filter and fractional coffee packs,” says Sarah Averkamp, market manager with Curwood. “Our experience in sustainable packaging helps roasters reduce their package’s carbon footprint while also achieving the productivity, durability, printability and quality that are critical to overall packaging success.”
bMET II allows roasters to transition from 3-ply films to 2-ply, reducing material weight up to 30%, the company reports.
